Art at the Market (feat. Alia Fawaz)

Join St. Roch Market New Orleans in our monthly celebration of the arts. Each month, we’ll showcase the talent of a local artist and a gallery of their work, with pieces available to purchase. Enjoy happy hour-priced drinks from The Mayhaw all evening, plus dining selections from the market’s diverse lineup of award-winning vendors.

ALIA FAWAZ is a self-taught, free-range, Lebanese-American who learned to detest art class after the 4th grade, but continued to paint and draw in secret and as often as possible. At 17 she was selling her work door to door for bill money and hand painting billboards for small shops on the floor of her Michigan basement. Ten years ago, she relocated to Carencro, Louisiana on a whim to play in a thrash band but ended up painting and hermiting at her tiny camp on the bayou with her beloved country dog Ella Garu. Alia draws influence subliminally and embraces freedom in her personal work, allowing paintings to become what they will and rejects the idea that a singular signature ‘line’ is necessary. She feels her work is a direct result of experiences that form, and expose, her multifaceted self. You can find her listening to the city of New Orleans via bike, Captain Beefheart, the woods, building fires and peeing standing up. She’s not too keen on the idea of bios, grading art, and frying bacon naked.
